The Xiao Style Edit
We visited artist Xiao (@yu_xiao_art) at her London studio to talk about her work and the role fashion plays in her life. Originally from China, Xiao is currently undertaking practice-led research at the Royal College of Art in London.
Through cutting her paintings and exposing the "underbelly" of the canvas, deconstructing and reconstructing her painting's body, Xiao explores themes of transformation, vulnerability, trauma and hidden objects, inspired by her own female body and experiences around physical health. This "ripping" and colourful combinations come through in Xiao's fashion sense: clothes, much like her paints, become a way of expressing herself.
Passionate about experimenting both through her art and her fashion, Xiao loves the simplicity of neutral cotton and linen pieces, mixed with bold colours and prints. Scroll down to find her favourite pieces from Glassworks and watch the full interview below.
Studio day.
Xiao opted for this vertical striped oversized shirt (the pastel tones and stripes remind of her paintings) layered over a cobalt blue knit tank. Pair with comfortable blue denim and cosy socks for the perfect studio day outfit.
Colour theory.
Bringing all primary colours to play, Xiao paired this bright colour stripe sweater vest with a flattering pair of bag waist jeans in a subtle oatmeal colour. To complete the look, match the burgundy beanie to our burgundy classic ribbed socks.
Chic meets comfort.
Xiao layered the classic linen tie front shirt in white with our black tie dye ribbed trousers (the elasticated waist and loose fit makes them a super comfortable trouser, easy to dress up or down). To add a pop of colour, opt for the lime green knit tank and these cute daisy checkered socks.
